OCCLUSIVE-FOCUSED MOISTURIZERS

Occlusive-focused moisturizers emphasize reducing moisture loss by creating a protective layer over the skin's surface. This layer slows the evaporation of water, allowing hydration to remain within the outer layers of the skin for a longer period.

Because they provide the greatest reduction in water loss, occlusive-rich moisturizers are often thicker, richer, and more protective than lightweight moisturizers. They are commonly used when the skin is very dry or when additional barrier support is desired.

 

MOST MOISTURIZERS USE MULTIPLE APPROACHES

Although moisturizers are often described according to these three approaches, very few products rely on only one. Most modern moisturizers combine hydrating, softening, and moisture-retaining mechanisms within a single formulation to provide more balanced performance.

The proportion of each approach influences how a moisturizer feels during application, how quickly it absorbs, how long its effects last, and the type of skin it is designed to support. A lightweight daily moisturizer may emphasize hydration with minimal surface protection, while a richer moisturizer may place greater emphasis on reducing water loss. Both remain moisturizers because they serve the same overall role within skincare, even though they achieve that goal using different balances of moisturizing mechanisms.
